PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low pressure gas discharge lamp which generates radiation that is as near as possible to the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. SOLUTION: The low pressure gas discharge lamp comprises a gas discharge container which is equipped with a sealed gas that contains a copper compound selected from a group made of an oxide of copper, chalcogenide, hydroxide, hydride and metal organic compound, and an interference gas. Further, an electrode and a formation and sustaining means of the low pressure gas discharge are provided in the discharge container.
