PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module wherein a light emitting element, an optical fiber and a photodetector are included and which performs simple and highly precise APC(Automatic Power Control) control, and a method for detecting light in the optical module. SOLUTION: The light emitting device 100 which includes a surface light emitting laser 102, the optical fiber 200 which includes a core 201 and a clad 202 and makes incident light exited from the surface light emitting laser 102 through the core 201 part of the end surface 200a and a photodetector 300 are included in the optical module 1000. A notched part 203 is provided in the optical fiber 200 as a light taking-out part for taking out a part of light propagating the inside of the core 201. Light exited form the notched part 203 is detected by the photodetector 300.
