PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly and accurately recognize the edge of a steel panel even if brightness is largely varied in one coil. SOLUTION: When the edge of the steel panel is detected on the basis of the brightness of the surface image of the steel panel in one scanning or several scannings, a threshold value at a time when the edge of the steel panel is detected on the basis of the brightness state of the surface image of the steel panel in one scanning or several scannings is calculated to make it possible to properly recognize the edge of the steel panel, even if brightness is largely varied in one coil to prevent the lowering of the function of a flaw detector caused by the fluctuations of brightness.
