PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problem that control related to function conversion and speed adjustment is required because of large difference in function allotment in a computer system when a current leading magnetic disk device is substituted for an old magnetic disk device. SOLUTION: The start address of a memory 3 and the number of bytes recorded in tracks are supplied to a virtual cylinder means 4 from a microprocessor 8, and an operation clock is supplied to the means 4 from an oscillator 7, and the means 4 sends an index pulse to a host device 1 and generates a read/write address by a head selection indication received from the host device and supplies it to a memory data read/write means 5. The memory data read/write means 5 is connected to a memory controller 11, and the memory controller 11 reads and writes data in and from a semiconductor memory (DRAM) 3.
