PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for recording which can record a high quality image based on an optimal recording mode for a multi-pass recording and can improve a production yield of a recording head. SOLUTION: A check pattern for checking image quality is recorded with recording modes A, B for the multi-pass recording. An optimal mode among the recording modes A, B is selected based on the recording result of the check patterns to execute the multi-pass recording.
