PURPOSE: An AAL5/HDLC(Adaptation Layer 5/High-level Data Link Control) converting apparatus in an ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode)-based system is provided to perform an AAL5/HDLC conversion in a link connected between the ATM-based systems, transmit and receive HDLC frame data. CONSTITUTION: An AAL5-HDLC converting circuit including the first DPRAM(Dual Port RAM)(41), a DPRAM record control unit(42-1), the second DPRAM(43), and an HDLC frame generating unit(44-1) converts an ATM cell with an AAL5 type into frame data with an HDLC type, and transmits the frame data with the HDLC type to an object system. An HDLC-AAL5 converting circuit including an HDLC frame transmitting unit(44-2), the second DPRAM(43), a DPRAM read control unit(42-2), and the first DPRAM(41) converts frame data with the HDLC type into an ATM cell with the AAL5 type, and outputs the ATM cell with the AAL5 type.
