PURPOSE: To prevent chattering by suppressing the excess pressure change of a pilot chamber in inverting the projecting and retracting steps of a piston rod, and to rapidly start an attenuating force in an attenuating force adjustable hydraulic damper having a pilot attenuating force regulating valve. CONSTITUTION: The piston 5 coupled to the piston rod 11 is slidably engaged within a cylinder 2 in which an oil liquid is sealed. Pilot type projecting side and retracting side attenuating force adjustable mechanisms 6 and 7 are mounted at the piston 5, and check valves 29, 62 are respectively provided at the inlets of back pressure chambers 23, 57 (pilot chambers). Orifice passages 25A, 59A are respectively provided at relief valves 25, 59 of the chambers 23, 57. When the projecting stroke of the rod 11 is inverted, the pressures of the chambers 23, 57 are respectively maintained by the valves 26, 62, the chambers 23, 57 are suitably pressurized via the passages 25A, 59A. Hence, chattering of the seal rings 22, 55 are respectively prevented, pressure rises of the chambers 23, 57 are accelerated, and the attenuating force is rapidly started.
