PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a user to sufficiently confirm the displayed contents of a display part in portable equipment having a back light for illuminating the display part and an operation part. SOLUTION: The portable equipment has the display part 8, the operation part 9, a timer 12 and the back light 10 for illuminating the display part and the operation part and starts the timer according to the operation of the operation part for lighting the back light for the fixed time of the timer. The portable equipment is provided with an acceleration sensor 11 for detecting the vibration of the portable equipment to extend the lighting period of the back light when vibration is detected by the sensor during the lighting period. Consequently, the sensor detects holding of the portable equipment with the hand of a user as the vibration of the portable equipment. Only if the back light is lighted in this case, the lighting period can be extended even without new key operation. Thus, even in a state where the content of the display part cannot be confirmed because its surrounding is dark, the display content can sufficiently be confirmed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
