PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of effectively improving the reading efficiency. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a reading means for reading out an image, a moving means 105 for moving the reading means, a detection means 103 for detecting a reference reading position, a storage means 113 for storing a relative current position from the reference reading position of the reading means, and a communication means 116 for receiving an instruction of a relative read starting position from the reference reading position of the reading means. The reading means is moved from the current position to the start position to start reading, and after completing the reading, the reading means is allowed to stand by on a read completion position.
