PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording device having a high recording density. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording/reproducing device is provided with: a magnetic recording medium for magnetically storing a signal; and a thin film magnetic head having a magneto-resistive element for detecting a magnetic field leaking from the magnetic recording medium. The magneto-resistive element of the magnetic head is a multilayer film, in which nonmagnetic conductive films are respectively held between two pairs of magnetic films. The multilayer film is provided with a magnetic film made sensitive to an external magnetic field to rotate its magnetization, and a pair of magnetic films disposed symmetrically whose magnetization direction is fixed with respect to the external magnetic field.
