PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium whose linear recording density D<SB>50</SB>, S/N ratio and off-track characteristics in recording and reproduction characteristics are improved so as to be suitable for high density magnetic recording. SOLUTION: A (110) oriented film 103 consisting of a material having a NaCl type crystal structure and a film 104 consisting of a material having a bcc structure are formed on a non-magnetic substrate 101 and a magnetic film 105 consisting of a Co based alloy having a hcp structure is formed thereon. Or, a magnetic film consisting of a Co based alloy having a hcp structure is formed on a (110) oriented film consisting of a material having a NaCl type crystal structure. Or, a base layer consisting of a material having a bcc structure and a magnetic layer consisting of a Co based alloy having a hcp structure are successively formed using a (110) single crystal consisting of a material having a NaCl type crystal structure as a substrate. Or, a magnetic film consisting of a Co based alloy having a hcp structure is formed directly on a substrate using a (110) single crystal consisting of a material having a NaCl type crystal structure as the substrate.
