PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record data by physically evading a segment made into a defective segment in reusing an information recording medium used thus far by a format or writing system having a defect management function by a format or writing system not having the defect management function. SOLUTION: When a CD-MRW drive 2 receives a request for the defect management information by receiving a get defect table information command from a host computer 1, the drive reads the defect management information of a CD-MRW disk loaded therein out of the CD-MRW disk (or a RAM) and transfers the information to the host computer 1.
