The bottom end of the suction pipe (8) includes an opening for directing water-jets against the sediment in front of the inlet opening in the dredger head (9), the jets being used to break up the sediment. A lower edge of the dredger head at its inlet opening includes a surface for supporting this head and at least part of the suction pipe against the bottom of the hole formed by the water-jets. An independent claim is also included for a suction dredger (1) with a water-jet device such as a jet beam located close to or on the dredger head, the device being movable in a vertical plane and preferably adjustably connected to the suction pipe.
