With a typical gate latch, a bolt or bar rests passively in a notched receptacle, which is attached to the gate post, and is lifted out of the receptacle by a vertical motion. In this invention, the bar is actively held tight in the receptacle so that it canno t be jiggled open. Opening the latch requires the exertion of a rotational motion on the handle , which is attached to the bar. The bar pivots on a bolt that is affixed through the bar's centrepoint. A cylindrical housing, notched to fit over the bar, contains a spring, which displaces the bar into the receptacle automatically. A latch of this nature will lock securely by itself when the gate is pushed shut, requiring no mechanical action, such as slidin g a bolt into place, by the operator. A safety bar, which protrudes from the bottom edge o f the latch, ensures that an animal cannot lift the latch. The option of the new latch will give the owner increased security over their valuebles.
