PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heterocyclic compound having high stability useful as an intermediate in a formation reaction of an azomethine dye by a direct coupling reaction of an aromatic amine compound with a heterocyclic compound and to provide a method for producing the heterocyclic compound and provide a method for forming the azomethine dye by using the heterocyclic compound. SOLUTION: The present invention provides the heterocyclic compound represented by a general formula (1-1) or a general formula (1-2) [wherein R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a substituent group; B represents an atomic group necessary to form a nitrogen-containing heterocycle; X and Y each represent a substituent group capable of leaving by reaction with a nucleophilic reagent, with the proviso that X and Y are not same substituent groups and the heterocyclic compound represented by general formula (1-1) does not form an imidazole ring to which a chlorine atom as X is bonded and a nitrogen atom as Y is bonded], the method for producing the heterocyclic compound and the method for forming the azomethine dye by using the heterocyclic compound].
