PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a CPP spin valve magnetic detector which can be reduced in effective element area even when it is increased in optical element area. SOLUTION: A current constriction layer 54 provided with an insulating part and a conductive part is formed inside a free magnetic layer 26, so that a sense current constricted by the current constriction layer 54 can be less diffused, and the sense current flowing through the free magnetic layer 26 can be surely locally kept high in current density. Therefore, even when the optical element area of the free magnetic layer 26 is set at 0.01μm<SP>2</SP>or above in the direction in parallel with the surface of a film, the magnetic detector can be surely reduced in effective element area, so that the CPP magnetic detector having large▵R and a high regeneration output can be easily provided.
