PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging device and a control method therefor, capable of activating and switching between photographing, recording and reproducing modes with ease, removing barriers between the modes, reducing time for starting phototaking in the reproducing mode by enabling to start phototaking, even in reproduction mode by operating an operatinon member other than that for mode switching (pressing of shutter button), and allowing a user to collapse a lens barrel, any time the user desires. SOLUTION: The image pickup device comprises a first mode for recording a taken image in a recording medium as an image file, and a second mode for reproducing the image file. The device is also provided with the operation member, capable of switching to each mode by performing different operations on the operation member, which returns to its original state after the operation, and a display for showing the present mode.
