PURPOSE: A method for encoding motion pictures is provided to reduce an amount of calculation for intra prediction by proceeding with intra prediction in four directions and adding one intra prediction according to the result. CONSTITUTION: Blocks constructing a macro block are encoded by using intra prediction modes 1-4 different in direction(S401). Values of the encoding in different intra prediction modes are stored(S402). It is judged whether the two intra prediction modes having the best efficiency are modes 1 and 3, 1 and 4, 2 and 3, or 2 and 4(S403). If so, an intra prediction mode having a direction between the two intra prediction modes is selected to proceed with encoding(S404). An intra prediction mode having the most excellent encoding efficiency is selected by comparing a value of calculating DC prediction mode, the result value of the selected intra prediction mode, and the result values of the stored intra prediction modes(S405). Intra prediction encoding is proceeded by the selected intra prediction mode(S409). |
