PURPOSE: A driving method and a driving device of a plasma display panel is provided to elongate a cell lifetime by reducing unnecessary power consumption when small number of cells are to be illuminated. CONSTITUTION: A device for driving a plasma display panel includes a lighting ratio detection circuit(74) and a controller(71). The plasma display panel executes an addressing for generating a wall voltage in cells to be lighted based on display data and performs a sustain so as to generate plural times of display discharge in the cells to be lighted based on luminance of a display by supplying a voltage pulse train to all cells at the same time. The lighting ratio detection circuit detects a ratio of lighting according to display data that determines contents of addressing. The lighting ratio represents a ratio of the number of cells to be lighted to the total sum number of cells. The controller changes a waveform of a voltage pulse applied in the sustaining step, so that a gradient of the voltage varies at a leading edge becomes smaller for a large value of the ratio of lighting than for a small value of the same.
