PURPOSE: A method for charging a lithium sulfur battery is provided, to improve lifetime characteristic of a battery by optimizing charging conditions. CONSTITUTION: The method for charging a lithium sulfur battery using a material selected from the group consisting of elemental sulfur, Li2Sn (n>=1), Li2Sn (n>=1) dissolved in catholyte, an organic sulfur compound, and a carbon-sulfur polymer ((C2Sx)n, x is 2.5-50 and n>=2) as a positive electrode active material, comprises the step of charging the battery at a cut-off voltage equal to or greater than 2.45 V and less than 2.7 V. Preferably the cut-off voltage is 2.6 V.
