PURPOSE: A microwave oven and a control method thereof are provided to prevent the generation of heat and sparks at a moving device, a cooking tool, between the moving device and the cooking tool, and between the moving device and the wall of a cooking chamber with high-frequency waves by operating a magnetron after moving the cooking tool to the cooking position if the moving device and the magnetron are operated at the same time. CONSTITUTION: A microwave oven comprises a magnetron(11) for generating high-frequency waves; a switching device(33) for switching electrical coupling between a power unit and the magnetron; a moving device for moving a cooking tool in a cooking chamber(20) from an initial position to a cooking position; and a control unit for controlling the switching device to operate the magnetron after moving the cooking tool to the cooking position by the moving device if the magnetron and the moving device have to be operated at the same time. The cooking tool is a heater(31,32) for heating foods put in the cooking chamber and the moving device includes a rotating device for rotating the heater.
