PURPOSE: A device for preventing overheating of an engine for a vehicle is provided to prevent the breakdown of the engine and a fire caused by the overheating of the engine by actively warning a driver of the overheating with prohibiting shift and starting the engine and cutting off the supply of fuel in lack of coolant. CONSTITUTION: A device for preventing overheating of an engine for a vehicle comprises a coolant level detecting sensor(100) for detecting the level of coolant; a driving circuit(200) driven to the detected level of the coolant to prevent movements of a shift lever and starting of the engine; an ECU(Electronic Control Unit,300) for outputting a warning lamp lighting signal in lack of the coolant by deciding the coolant level signal output from the drive circuit; a driving unit(400) for preventing movements of the shift lever to operations of the driving circuit, cutting off the supply of fuel to a control signal output from the ECU and lighting a warning lamp; and a shift lever locking device for preventing and releasing the movements of the shift lever to the operation of the driving unit.
