PURPOSE: An operating device of an automatic transmission for a vehicle is provided to make a driver perform shift operation in a state of comfortably leaning against the back of a seat and to prevent a driver from turning eyes upon a gearshift lever during performing shift, by installing a shift operation unit to a steering wheel. CONSTITUTION: An operating device of an automatic transmission for a vehicle comprises the automatic transmission operating the output from an engine and a shift operation unit(20) disposed to the center of a steering wheel(10) of a steering system to operate the automatic transmission. The shift operation unit includes operating knobs(21) by stages. The operation by stages of the gearshift lever is transmitted to a manual control lever through a gearshift control cable of the automatic transmission. An inhibitor switch is operated by the operation of the manual control lever. The operation of the inhibitor switch is connected to the operation of the whole including a control unit.
