PURPOSE: A method of compensating for a brightness level of a monitoring DVR(Digital Video Recorder) is provided to compensate for a brightness level of a video signal in reference to an illumination value, and to record the compensated video signal, thereby preventing a video image having a low brightness level from being recorded. CONSTITUTION: A DVR performs a series of monitoring operations(S10). If a user requests a 'brightness level compensation mode setup'(S11), the DVR stores a user input time interval(S12). The DVR detects illumination values, and stores the illumination values by distinguishing the illumination values(S14). The DVR confirms a current time(S15), and retrieves an illumination value corresponding to the confirmed current time(S16). The DVR records a video image whose brightness level is compensated for, or outputs the compensated video image(S17).
