PURPOSE: A device for detecting a defect signal of an optical recording/reproducing device is provided to apply an asymmetrical degree of an inputted signal when deciding whether a defect is generated by applying a ratio of a maximum value to a minimal value, and to control a permissive range for the deciding according to the asymmetry, thereby adaptively deciding a defect signal although the inputted signal has asymmetrical characteristics. CONSTITUTION: A maximum value decider(130) detects a maximum value from inputted signals based on a set reference maximum value, outputs the detected maximum value, and initializes the detected maximum value as a reference maximum value for a next maximum value detection period. A minimal value detector(150) detects a minimal value from inputted signals based on a set reference minimal value, outputs the minimal value, and initializes the minimal value as a reference minimal value for a next minimal value detection period. An asymmetrical detector(170) detects asymmetry of the inputted signals. A defect decider(190) decides whether a defect signal is generated by using the maximum value, the minimal value, and the asymmetry.
