PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which has a structure that is easily miniaturized in which the size of its width direction (vertical scanning direction) can be reduced. SOLUTION: This image reader 100 which is attachably/detachably fitted to electronic equipment 10 and scans and reads an image formed on a plane to be read comprises an image reading part 170 for reading the image and a rotary encoder 140 for detecting a scanning movement amount of the image reading part 170. The rotary encoder 140 has a scaler 142 which is arranged tiltedly with respect to a vertical scanning direction perpendicular to a horizontal scanning direction and is displaced while the image reading part 170 is moved for scanning.
