PURPOSE: An STM-256 insertion extractor is provided to multiplex sub signals to transmit the multiplexed signals, and to supply a speech path between lower channels, thereby enabling low-speed data communication and maintenance signal communication without another communication line between lower sub networks. CONSTITUTION: In an upward connection to each of STM-64 insertion extractors(210,220,230,240), each of the STM-64 insertion extractors(210,220,230,240) receives 16 622Mbps electric data signals of channels and one 622MHz clock signal from each of optical transceivers. The electric data signals are synchronized with the clock signal. In a downward connection to each of the optical transceivers from the STM-64 insertion extractors(210,220,230,240), each of the STM-64 insertion extractors(210,220,230,240) transmits the 16 622Mbps electric data signals and the one 622MHz clock signal to each of the optical transceivers.
