A vehicle speed control system 10 automatically applies positive and negative torque the vehicle wheels to cause it to travel at a target speed value. It receives Information indicative of the gradient of the road and controls the rate of change of the applied torque in dependence on the incline of the driving surface. Thus the vehicle may accelerate or decelerate to the set speed at a more or less aggressive rate according to the steepness of the road. The gradient-dependent torque control may only be implemented in some driving modes e.g. when driving on low-friction on- or off-road surfaces such as sand, snow, ice, grass, gravel or mud. The rate of change of torque may prevent the vehicle from jerking and may be applied iteratively. |
