PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for attenuating noise of a video signal are provided to adaptively control a delayed video signal and a filtered video signal in response to the level of noise applied to the video signal and adaptively attenuate the noise without damaging or blurring the contour of the video signal. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for attenuating noise of a video signal includes a signal delay(201) for delaying an input video signal in horizontal and vertical directions to generate a video signal sequence, a filter(203) for filtering the video signal delayed by the signal delay, and a noise measuring unit(205) for measuring a noise applied to the video signal. The apparatus further includes a contour calculator(207) for calculating the contour of the video signal based on a difference among surrounding pixels in the generated video signal sequence, a weight generator(209) for generating a weight based on the calculated contour and the measure noise, and a mixer(211) for controlling the delayed video signal and the filtered video signal in response to the weight and mixing the controlled video signals.
