PURPOSE: A cleaning safety device of a microwave oven and a control method thereof are provided to safely control the microwave oven by deciding whether a cleaning tool exists in a cooking chamber before cooking or during cooking and by controlling the driving of a magnetron according to the sensing result. CONSTITUTION: A cleaning safety device of a microwave oven comprises a cleaning tool(20) detachably installed to the inside of a cooking chamber(10); a sensor(30) sensing the cleaning tool exists in the cooking chamber; and a control part making cooking not executed if the existence of the cooking tool in the cooking chamber is sensed by the sensor before cooking or during cooking. The cooking tool includes an installation member for detachably installing the cooling tool to the inside of the cooking chamber, and the sensor senses the difference between the installation and removal of the cleaning tool.
