摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting optical system having high lighting efficiency, provided with a lighting range regulation means for the whole region to be illuminated on the front stage of a color-analyzing means and provided with a lighting range regulation means for only a partial region on the rear stage of a color analysis means and for accurately regulating the size of the lighting range for each region to be illuminated in a simple constitution, and to provide a projection-type display device. SOLUTION: The device is for projecting light flux from a light source 10 for breaking down into colors with dichroic mirrors 30 and 31 via a projection optical system 90, to be light-modulated with reflection-type liquid crystal display elements 70a-c so as to be combined with a cross dichroic prism 73. A lens A2 of a first regulation means 20 and a lens C3 of a second regulation means 40 on a relay optical path are set movable, in the optical axis direction to regulate a lighting range corresponding to them. For an optical system without relays and in a system with relays, the case where the lighting range is small, as compared with the case where the lighting range is large, is set so as to be more satisfactory in peripheral part lighting performance of the region to be illuminated and prescribed conditional equations are satisfied.
