PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader that determines ground detection areas corresponding to various document sizes to perform ground detection and performs proper ground removal from a document to improve read image quality. SOLUTION: A document reader 1 detects the fixed form sizes of documents of various fixed form sizes with document length sensors 7, 8, and 9 and document width sensors 10 and 11. A control part 2 determines a ground detection area on the basis of the document size that a fixed form document size decision part 3 decides on the basis of the detection results or a document size specified by a document size specification part 6. A ground detection area specification part 4 generates a ground detection area signal on the basis of ground detection area pixel position information from the control part 2. Finally, ground removal part 5 determines a ground level in the effective period of the ground detection area signal and normalizes read image data with the determined ground level to remove the background.
