The system has a long life X-ray localizer light source (10) situated at a focal spot (F1). An optical concentrator (11) focuses the X-ray localizer light from the light source to another focal spot (F2). An opaque shield (14) with an aperture (16) situated proximate to the latter focal spot has a geometrical shape so as to maximize light throughout while meeting light field edge contrast requirements of the system.
