PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose an automatic gain control unit and an automatic gain control method capable of improving reliability. SOLUTION: There are provided a level detection means for detecting a sound pressure level in high- and low- frequency bands or a low-frequency band in an input sound signal; a correction means for varying a correction curve approximating prescribed frequency characteristics corresponding to the sound pressure level detected by the level detection means for correcting the input sound signal according to the correction curve; and a level adjustment means for adjusting the signal level of the input sound signal corrected by the correction means, thus effectively preventing the high- and low-frequency bands that cannot be easily heard as sound from carrying out automatic gain control in the same manner as a middle-frequency band, and hence realizing the automatic gain control unit capable of increasing reliability.
