PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely bring a discharge lamp to a stable lighting preventing it from fading away at inversion of an inverter without deteriorating its life, even if a lamp current drastically changes due to change of power source environment and operating environment of a lighting device, electric characteristics of a discharge lamp, or the like at start-up. SOLUTION: For the lighting device controlling an input to supplied from a direct current power source E to a discharge lamp La through an DC/DC converter 1 and an inverter 2 in accordance with detection results of a lamp voltage detecting part 6 and a lamp current detecting part 7, an electrode heating period is provided for setting output alternation time to the discharge lamp at start-up longer than that at normal lighting, and the alternation time during the electrode heating period is to be set still longer as the supply power or current to the discharge lamp is lowered.
