PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a member holding device capable of miniaturizing a case body. SOLUTION: A sliding door body 2 is put in closing operation in a state of a hook body 36 being changed into a draw-in attitude without holding an engaging pin 3. When the engaging pin 3 is brought close to the hook body 36, the engaging pin 3 avoids a holding piece part 48 of the hook body 36 being guided by a widened recessed part 26 of the case body 22 and an inclined face part 47 of the hook body 36. After avoiding the holding piece part 48, a coil spring 14 energizes the engaging pin 3 to the holding recessed part 46 side of the hook body 36, and the engaging pin 3 is held to the holding recessed part 46 by the resilience of the coil spring 14. Consequently, there is no need to provide the case body 22 with a return mechanism for energizing the engaging pin 3 to the holding recessed part 46 after the engaging pin 3 avoids the holding piece part 48, and the constitution of a sliding door closer 21 is simplified to permit miniaturization.
