PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sealed alkaline storage battery having long life. SOLUTION: The sealed alkaline storage battery 1 has a metallic case 2 which is a battery container and a safety valve 4 installed in the upper part of the metallic case 2. The safety valve 4 has a valve body 8 made of a rubber material having high hydrogen permeability and a supporting member 6 supporting the valve body 8. Since the valve body 8 is made of the rubber material having high hydrogen permeability, if the inside pressure is a degree not deforming the valve body 8, hydrogen gas generated by the oxidation of an electrode can permeate the valve body 8. By appropriately controlling the hydrogen permeating amount, the discharge reserving amount of a negative electrode is kept almost constant, and the variation of inner pressure in overcharge or overdischarge is rarely produced. Therefore, since the loss of an inside electrolyte caused by the operation of the safety valve is seldom occurs, the life of the battery can be lengthened. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
