PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a high-reliability light source device capable of preventing a dielectric breakdown failure between an airtight vessel and an external electrode and having a stable luminescence property without generating ozone or the like. SOLUTION: This light source device is provided with: at least one airtight vessel; a discharge medium enclosed in the airtight vessel and mainly containing a rare gas; and at least first and second electrodes for exciting the discharge medium. The light source device is characterized by that at least the second electrode is the so-called external electrode disposed outside the airtight vessel; and its curvature is not less than 10μm in a part of the external electrode without contacting the airtight vessel and at an end falling on the airtight vessel.
