A filter material for the adsorption of harmful substances in breathed air comprises active carbon made from coconut husks impregnated with zinc and possibly additionally with triethylene diamine and silver. Preferably, the active carbon contains 4-9 wt.% zinc, 0-1 wt.% copper, 0-2 wt.% triethylene diamine and 0-1 wt.% silver. No chrome, vanadium, molybdenum, cobalt or nickel are involved.
