PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical motor drive with a brake and a working machine, capable of saving energy by restraining generation of frictional resistance at the releasing of the brake. SOLUTION: A brake section 13 of a turning drive 10 has a piston 133 disposed around a rotating shaft body 121 in the vertical direction in a no-contact condition and can be operated in the vertical direction, a fixed plate 135 disposed under the piston 133, and a frictional plate 134 which is disposed between the piston 133 and the fixed plate 135, and can rotate together with the rotating shaft body 121 and slide along the rotating shaft body 121. Brake torque is generated, by pressing the frictional plate 134 against the fixed plate 135 with the piston 133 by operating the piston 133 downward so as to operate the piston 133 upward and to release the brake. There is provided a coil spring 138 for pressing against the frictional plate 134 between the piston 133 and the fixed plate 135 so that the plate will not be brought into contact with both of them at the releasing of the brake.
