PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new thickening agent having an environmental suitability and a new grease composition satisfying both an elastic fluid lubrication under a high pressure in a high shear field and excellent lubricating properties on various interfaces. SOLUTION: The thickening agent comprises a disklike compound that contains a disklike parent nucleus and three or more side-chain groups extended radially from the disklike parent nucleus in the molecule and at least one tautomeric group in the disklike parent nucleus and/or the side chain. At least one side-chain group of the three or more side-chain groups contains a long-chain group, in which≥20 atoms of an atom selected from the group consisting of oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, silicon and sulfur are connected in a straight-chain form or branched-chain form, at the terminal of the side chain.
