PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase an exchange coupling magnetic field Hex between soft magnetic layers without generating a problem upon writing due to saturation of magnetization. SOLUTION: A perpendicular magnetic recording medium 100 is provided with a substrate 110, a soft magnetic backing layer 114 and a main magnetic recording layer 124 to be a magnetic recording layer. The soft magnetic backing layer 114 has at least a first soft magnetic layer 202a, a first non-magnetic layer 204a, a second soft magnetic layer 202b, a second non-magnetic layer 204b and a third soft magnetic layer 202c. The second non-magnetic layer 204b is a non-magnetic layer magnetically exchange coupling the second soft magnetic layer 202b and the third soft magnetic layer 202c which are opposed to each other sandwiching the second non-magnetic layer 204b by an anti-ferromagnetic interlayer interaction.
