PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily display a feature video image on a selection screen or the like of AV data by creating the feature video image of the AV data recorded on an external or built-in recording medium and recording the created feature video image in a prescribed recording area. SOLUTION: A recording and playback apparatus 10 comprises an external input I/F 15 which is capable of recording and playing back AV data and removably loads a DVD 21 with AV data recorded thereon; an HD 18 recording AV data thereon; and a feature video image creating means 17 for recording a feature video image of the AV data recorded on the HD18 or on the DVD 21 in a memory 12 or in a cache area 18b of the HD 18. The AV data are constituted of a chapter that becomes a management unit and a title constituted of one or more chapters and contain at least either video or audio, and the feature video image creating means 17 creates the feature video image by the unit of a title and/or by the unit of a chapter in accordance with operation input from a user or predetermined rules.
