An injection device has an elongate body 1 with a hollow needle 8 at a distal end; a reservoir for an injection material 12, which may be the lumen of the needle; a plunger 3 with a drive element (such as first spring 5 or compressed gas) providing an injection force, and a distal boot 10 sealing the needle lumen. The boot provides a tissue interface and a distal seal 11 which is penetrated by the bevelled tip of the needle upon the application of pressure to an eye. The punctured boot slides on the needle, allowing it to advance through the sclera. Injection occurs automatically when the needle reaches a space in the ocular tissue such as the suprachoroidal space. The injection material may a solid or liquid and the distal element may be biased by a second spring 9 or collapsible nitinol arms (27, figure 10). The plunger may have a lumen into which fluid is fed via a luer fitting (figure 5). |
