1,263,844. Fibre-containing polymeric articles. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 25 June, 1970 [14 July, 1969], No. 30836/70. Headings C3P and C3T. Polymeric articles, particularly fluid seals, comprise a blend of elastomeric material and polymeric fibres some of which are exposed at the surface of the article. The articles, which are free of other re-inforcing or filler materials, are made by conventional blending and are then surface heated to expose the fibres, e.g. by mild abrasion or chemical swelling to break the elastomer film covering the fibres adjacent the surface. Suitable elastomers are acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, SBR, polyisoprene, polychloroprene, polyacrylates and silicone rubbers. Suitable fibres comprise polyamide, polyimide, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane and polyfluorocarbons, e.g. P.T.F.E., poly(C 2 F 3 Cl) and C 2 F 4 -C 3 F 6 copolymers. The proportion of elastomer to fibres may be from 1 : 4 to 6 : 1 by weight. Examples are given of a cured shaft seal derived from 200 parts by weight of etched P.T.F.E. fibres and 100 parts of acrylonitrilebutadiene rubber, and of a dual material seal made from the above composition as face material and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber as body material.
|
