The second stage of the heat treatment applied to the coated part B e.g. annealed steel or Al alloy is preferably conducted at a temperature of up to 600‹C, but higher than the least MP of the metals, e.g. 380‹C for 70% Sn-30% Cu, 170‹C for 50% Cu-50% In, or 450‹C for 58% Cu-42% Cd; the first stage is maintained at a temperature less by at least 20‹C than the least MP of the metals, e.g. 200‹C (Sn), 130‹C (In) or 200‹C (Cd). Heat treatment may be carried out in a bath of molten salts active to the metals in the coating, or to the phases or compounds formed during metal diffusion so that at least one of the metals, phases or compounds is partially eliminated; e.g. to reduce the Cu content of the coating the part is immersed in a molten alkali metal cyanide bath, and to modify the Al content an alkali metal chloride bath is used.
