Method and apparatus for varying the gain of an automatic gauge control loop for rolling mills wherein gauge is controlled by varying tension in the rolled strip between the last two stands of a tandem rolling mill. The gain of the loop is varied as a function of transport time between the bite of the rolls in the last stand and a thickness gauge positioned beyond the last stand. At low mill speeds (i.e., long transport times), the gain of the loop is maintained low and varied as a function of the cross-sectional area of the strip between the last two stands. At high mill speeds (i.e., short transport times), the gain of the loop is increased and varied as a function of both cross-sectional area and the speed of the last stand.
