Sulphur is recovered by placing the gas mixt. in turbulent flow, and contacting at 100-400 degrees C with catalyst granules having a diameter of less than 600 mu. The catalyst granules consists of active aluminium oxide with a specific surface of more than 50 m2/g, and a pore volume of more than 0.2 cm3/g. The contact time between the gas mixt. of the catalyst granules is less than 5 secs. The reaction temp. lies between the point at which ammonium sulphite crystallises, and 400 degrees C. The temp at which the gas stream is contacted with the catalyst granules is longer than the dew-point of sulphur so that the catalyst granules are loaded with S.
|
