1343739 Catalyst FUJIKURA CABLE WORKS Ltd 10 Jan 1972 [9 Jan 1971 4 Oct 1971] 1025/72 Heading B1E A catalyst composition for reducing the concentration of oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine comprises a carrier material having nickel and/or copper associated therewith, the nickel and/or copper having been brought into association with the carrier material by heating a mixture of the carrier material with a source of nickel and/or copper in the presence of a halogen source, at an elevated temperature and for a time sufficient to produce the catalyst composition, in an atmosphere containing carbon monoxide produced from carbonaceous substances containing a small amount of water therein and air. In the Examples, graphite flakes are heated with (1) NiO and NiBr 2 , (2) NiO, NiCl 2 and CuCl, (3) NiO and CuCl, (4) CuO and NiCl 2 , (5) CuO, NiCl 2 and LaCl 3 , (6) CuO, CuCl and Fe 2 O 3 , (7) CuO, CuCl and NiCl 2 . The carrier may also be graphite granules, blocks, chips, rods, pipes, plates, saddles or Raschig rings, or "Alundum" (Regd. T.M.), alumina, silica, magnesia, thoria, carborundum or titanium carbide or mixtures thereof.
