1383902 Finishing edges J W KITSON 10 Jan 1972 [14 Jan 1971] 1939/71 Heading B5K [Also in Divisions A4 and F2] An edging member 8 of generally U-shaped channel cross-section with a base wall 9 and adjoining side flanges 10, 11 at least one of which has an inwardly projecting side portion as 12 or 13, is joined to an edge of a panel by positioning the edging member with its channel facing upwardly and inserting into it the panel edge with one of the adjoining panel faces adjacent one side flange of the edging member and the opposite panel face spaced from the other side flange to form a groove and then introducing a liquid plastics bonding agent into said edging member to flow along the member to fill partially the depth of the channel and enter between the panel edge and the edging member and to subsequently form a rigid plastics body 6 adhesively secured to the panel and mechanically locked into the edging member by its inwardly projecting side flange portion(s). At least one further such edging member may be joined to the panel so that the edging members form a frame, e.g. of a cabinet, the bonding agent preferably serving also the joining the edging members together. Other fitments, e.g. a hinge anchorage may be similarly secured to the panel. The edging member may be of steel, e.g. coated with PVC aluminium, polystyrene, PVC or cardboard; the bonding agent may be a thermosetting or a thermoplastic material, e.g. a liquid polyester, epoxy resin or polyurethane composition or based on wax or bitumen; and the panel may be a metal sheet or a laminate comprising a foamed polyurethane core 19 between a polypropylene sheet 17 and a paper sheet 18 as shown or a polypropylene sheet adhesively bonded to a compressed wood pulp board (Fig. 3, not shown). As shown the panel 3 is slit at 20, 21 so that it can be folded to form inner side and base walls of a cabinet and is provided with recesses 23 in which is bonded by the plastics body 6 support plates 5 of sheet steel. Channel pieces 4 also of steel may be provided as reinforcements in recesses 22 in the panel and along the panel fold lines. A decorative outer finishing plate 7 may be attached by its flanges 30, 31 to the bottom and rear faces of the cabinet with its edge 29 located in the groove 28 of upright member 8. If a thin panel is used, Fig. 3, not shown, the groove between it and one channel flange may be reduced in width by including an insert. |
